Fed: UN committee calls for "Nigger" to be removed from sign

The managers of the Toowoomba sports ground say they are unlikely to change the nameof the controversial E S Nigger Brown stand despite a United Nations recommendation.

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination's found the word Niggeroffensive and insulting and has recommended the HOWARD Government take action to removeit.

Aboriginal activist STEPHEN HAGAN petitioned the UN committee to rule on the sign.

But the Toowoomba Sports Ground Trust, which manages the ground on behalf of the QueenslandGovernment, says it's unlikely they'll change the sign.

The sign honours EDWARD BROWN, Toowoomba's first rugby league international, who died in 1972.

Mr BROWN was not an Aborigine and is believed to have earned the nickname because ofhis fair complexion.
