Unsigned bands invited to participate in online contest

A online contest to find new music talent has been created by social music platform Last.Fm, Internet telephony company Skype, online social networking site Bebo and music download service 7Digital.

The contest enables unsigned bands to compete online, with the public voting for their favourite contestants at a cost of GBP0.80 per vote. Proceeds will be donated to Save the Children.

Although the contest has been compared with television show The X Factor, organiser John Leaver, of Monument PR, claimed the contest will attract 'better quality' talent. He said it is much easier for bands to participate online than travel to an audition and stated that many of the millions of bands registered online around the world would not take part in The X Factor.

Bands are being invited to register for the contest as soon as possible, with the winning band able to sign a deal with a record label.
