NSW:One dead, one trapped in Hume accident
EDs: correcting to say two cars only in accident and no truck, on updated advice.
SYDNEY, Aug 17 AAP - One person is dead and another is trapped after an accident which
has closed the Hume Highway in southern NSW.
Emergency services were called to the Hume Highway at Woomargama, just south of Holbrook,
about 7.05am (AEST) on Wednesday, after two cars were involved in an accident.
One person was dead, another was trapped and two others had suspected spinal and head
injuries, a NSW Ambulance spokeswoman told AAP.
"The trapped person is currently in the process of being extracted," she said.
All those involved were still at the scene.
The Highway is expected to remain closed in both directions for several hours to allow
for a police investigation and vehicle recovery.
Southbound traffic is being diverted at Holbrook on the Culcairn-Holbrook Road to Culcairn,
then to the Olympic Highway.
Northbound traffic is being diverted at Table Top onto the Olympic Highway north of
Albury, then to Culcairn to use the Culcairn-Holbrook Road.

Cbeyond Aims Cloud Servers at SMBs
Type: News
Cbeyond, Inc., a provider of IT and communications services to small businesses, announced the company has made virtual servers and managed dedicated servers, a recent addition to its portfolio of technology solutions, available to small and medium-sized businesses across the U.S. and in more than 60 countries.
Through the acquisition in November 2010 of MaximumASP, the 2009 Microsoft Worldwide Hosting Partner of the Year, Cbeyond is now delivering technology services in the cloud, positioning Cbeyond as a national provider of cloud services, the Company said. Virtual and dedicated servers by Cbeyond are now available through all of Cbeyond's sales channels.
"We are excited to announce that virtual and dedicated servers powered by Cbeyond are now available to all of our current Cbeyond customers and to businesses nationwide," said Brooks Robinson, president of the Cbeyond Cloud Services division. "We see cloud services as a key growth catalyst for small and medium-sized businesses in 2011. If businesses are serious about growth in 2011, it's time to look to the cloud."
According to a release, with Cbeyond Cloud Servers, small and medium-sized businesses can access critical data and applications from the Internet rather than hosting it on-site. Businesses can select the Cbeyond package that fits their specific needs and Cbeyond provides the server, operating system, anti-virus and monitors and manages them 100 percent of the time.
"Cbeyond's Cloud Servers keeps my sanity in check. The server requires very little configuration and all the updates are automatically done - now that is peace of mind!" said Shawn Bordeaux, chief information officer for Just Right Auto Sales, a Cbeyond Cloud Services customer that also leverages Cbeyond's broadband, data and security solutions to run and grow his business.
"The benefits of Cbeyond Cloud Servers to small and medium-sized businesses are endless," said Silas Boyle, co-founder of MaximumASP and now vice president of Cbeyond Cloud Services. "Predictable expenses, anywhere access, business continuity, automated maintenance, scalability and reliability are just to name a few."

Unsigned bands invited to participate in online contest
Internet Business News
12-18-2006
A online contest to find new music talent has been created by social music platform Last.Fm, Internet telephony company Skype, online social networking site Bebo and music download service 7Digital.
The contest enables unsigned bands to compete online, with the public voting for their favourite contestants at a cost of GBP0.80 per vote. Proceeds will be donated to Save the Children.
Although the contest has been compared with television show The X Factor, organiser John Leaver, of Monument PR, claimed the contest will attract 'better quality' talent. He said it is much easier for bands to participate online than travel to an audition and stated that many of the millions of bands registered online around the world would not take part in The X Factor.
Bands are being invited to register for the contest as soon as possible, with the winning band able to sign a deal with a record label.

SA: Government has abandoned David Hicks - father
By Steve Larkin
ADELAIDE, Feb 14 AAP - David Hicks' father today accused the federal government of
abandoning his son, after it said the terror suspect was unlikely to face trial before
next year.
Meanwhile Hicks, 29, is studying for his Australian high school certificate while being
detained at a US military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the government revealed today.
The Adelaide-born Hicks has been held by the US at Guantanamo Bay since January 2002,
following his capture among Taliban forces in Afghanistan the previous month.
Attorney-General's Department secretary Robert Cornall today told a parliamentary committee
in Canberra it was unknown when Hicks would be tried by a US military commission.
"I don't think anyone can answer that question," Mr Cornall told a Senate estimates hearing.
"The Hicks trial is due to come back before the commission in March, but there is an
expectation ... that the matter may be delayed beyond March to late this year or possibly
early next year."
Hicks has pleaded not guilty to US-laid charges of conspiracy, attempted murder and
aiding the enemy.
Mr Cornall said the government had made every effort to ensure the trial was completed
as fairly and as quickly as possible, a statement which drew the ire of Hicks' father.
"The government has decided that it's not in its best interests to bring him back,"
Terry Hicks said today in Adelaide.
"The more they can have time extended (before Hicks is tried), the better for them,
particularly with all this business with Mamdouh Habib and what he's been saying.
"When he (Hicks) comes back, he's going to have a lot of things to say as well."
Mr Habib, freed last month by US authorities after spending more than three years in
custody as a terror suspect, alleged in a paid interview aired on the Nine Network's 60
Minutes yesterday, that he had been physically and mentally abused while in US detention.
Hicks has also claimed he has been abused.
Mr Cornall said government officials who had visited Guantanamo Bay had been assured
Hicks was being well treated.
"He has had, for example, quite a lot of reading material provided to him," Mr Cornall
told a Senate estimates hearing.
"He is, as I understand, pursuing studies through some open access college too, I think,
now study Year 11 to improve his education.
"We've received numerous assurances from the US that he is being treated humanely."
Terry Hicks said his son was studying for his high school certificate.
"He has been trying to do his year 11 and 12 (studies) ... on and off, I think, for
the past eight months," Mr Hicks said.
"He has had some difficulties with it and I'm not sure how far he's got. I shouldn't
think he would have access to everything he needs."
The government also today said it could not rule out Hicks being charged under Australian
law if he returned.
Justice Minister Chris Ellison told the Senate committee hearing he was unaware of
any evidence that Hicks had breached Australian law.

DOT.LAWYERS.
Forget legalese. Now they speak HTML.
You've run into a minor but persistent legal problem that keeps nagging you. If you don't deal with it soon, it could turn into something major. But the thought of tracking down a lawyer, dressing up, driving downtown and discussing the problem in a walnutpaneled office is enough to postpone action for another week or two.
That kind of thinking--and the fear of having to pay for high-priced legal services--has fueled demand for new ways to obtain legal information and advice. Many entrepreneurs are now turning to the Internet for a broad range of information. Some Web sites offer free advice on specific problems, along with easy ways to locate local attorneys who have the expertise to help. The sites are typically supported by advertising for law-related publications and merchandise. Some also include directories of lawyers, who pay for their listings.
The sites receive mixed reviews. Will Hornsby, a staff counsel for the American Bar Association (ABA) who focuses on delivery of legal services, contends legal sites are needed because they build public understanding of the law. "Sites that give information--generic or specific--contribute to people's ability to make educated decisions," Hornsby says.
He points to a recent ABA survey indicating one-quarter of moderate-income Americans ignore their legal problems, and another quarter solve them in ways that avoid the legal system. "The issue has shifted from whether people have access to a lawyer to how they can make legal decisions," he says. "Consumers generally lack information on how to make decisions and how to do a cost-benefit analysis." In that context, legal Web sites, similar to legal hot lines and self-help law books, are worthwhile because they put legal information in the public eye.
But the wide-open nature of the Internet also leads to the obvious downside of getting legal advice online: You don't know who's on the other side of the keyboard. As with any information gleaned from the Internet (or from books and magazines, for that matter), you have to decide whether the source is credible. If you're making legal decisions about your business based on the advice of an anonymous person whose fact-specific counsel appears on your screen, beware.
"The downside is catastrophic," says Dallas attorney Mark Ticer, chair of the Texas Supreme Court's Dallas Subcommittee on the Unauthorized Practice of Law. "One mistake can make a small-business owner lose everything he or she has." Ticer explains that entrepreneurs who post questions about their particular legal problems have no way of knowing whether the person who responds is licensed to practice law. "It's a hedge and a gamble," he says. "You can still get bad advice from a lawyer, but you [at least] have some confidence in their license.
"What are you going to do if these people give you the wrong advice? Who's going to make these people account for what they give you?"
Hornsby replies that Internet lawyers are subject to the same consumer-protection statutes and malpractice lawsuits as other lawyers. On the other hand, he notes, most Internet legal sites include disclaimers stating that their counsel is intended to be generic in nature. Says Hornsby, "It's presented in a marketplace where consumers are responsible for judging the advice they get."
TAKING A LOOK
If you're still interested after these words of caution, these extensive legal sites all cater to a nationwide clientele:
* FreeAdvice.com, sponsored by Advice & Counsel Inc. in San Francisco, was called "the most useful consumer legal site" by USA Today. Users can click on such topics as business law, intellectual property or employment law, then on various subtopics for information in a question-answer format. A "Find a lawyer" button links to "AttorneyPages," a user-friendly directory of lawyers and law firms searchable by city and area of specialization.
* FindLaw.com, which began in 1995 as a list of Internet resources for law librarians, provides a wealth of resources for attorneys as well as for the public. The site affords access to Supreme Court cases, state laws, government regulations and a wide range of materials on legal topics prepared by bar associations, law firms, legal publishers and government agencies, as well as links to legal organizations, law schools, law firm Web sites and more. The site's Small Business Center offers a home office guidebook, step-by-step checklists, model business plans, forms and other legal documents, and an extensive legal dictionary. One link takes the user to free e-mail counseling on small-business problems from SCORE.
* Nolo.com Inc., the former Nolo Press, which has offered self-help law books since 1971, provides a legal dictionary and an encyclopedia with articles on a broad range of legal topics, including small-business concerns, plus a research feature that enables users to find federal and state laws on given topics. Although Nolo.com employs numerous lawyers to prepare its materials, the site has a distinctive antilawyer attitude (including hundreds of lawyer jokes and a "Shark-talk" word game). One feature, "Ask Auntie Nolo," invites users to describe specific legal problems to the site's plain-spoken advisor, who claims to cut through the legalese--but offers overly simplistic responses. For a fee, users can download form documents to customize themselves.
* Law.com provides a law dictionary, online legal research and answers to frequently asked questions on various topics. A self-help law guide provides definitions, general information and links to helpful Web sites, available publications and forms to be downloaded and customized. For those who still can't find answers, the Web site's staff can direct users to other Web sites.
Some law firms offer online legal advice for residents of their states. For instance, www.rapidlaw.com is the Web site for Houston attorney James H. Miller. The site invites Texas residents or those doing business in Texas to send questions by e-mail, which an attorney will answer within 48 hours for a flat fee of $35. Those who need fast answers can telephone and speak with an attorney over the phone for $3 per minute.
IS IT FOR YOU?
Should business owners use these Web sites? It depends on what you need and how great your risk is. Internet attorney Christopher Wolf of Proskauer Rose LLP in Washington, DC, considers the sites a valuable resource for lawyers but dangerous for nonlawyers hoping to treat their own legal ills. "It's dangerous to engage in the practice of law without a license," he says. It's one thing to use sites to get educated so you know what to discuss with your attorney, he says, and another to think you no longer need a lawyer because you can learn what you need online.
Wolf especially warns against using legal documents found on the Internet. "They look OK but may be woefully inadequate," he says. "I'd want a lawyer skilled in the area to look them over."
Hornsby advises business owners to use sound judgment in evaluating legal sites. His advice:
* Look for a well-reasoned response.
* Check to see if collateral information is available.
* Determine whether responses are from a lawyer in your jurisdiction with expertise in the right field. Advice from another state may not be relevant.
* Be aware of the extent to which the site is selling services. "Do they offer advice that [traps] you into buying their products?" Hornsby asks. "It's important for consumers to find the most objective advice [to solve] their problems."

Seven ways to monetize marketing services online: Farm Journal describes how it's making money "beyond the banner".(LOGIN: EMERGING TRENDS IN THE PUBLISHING INDUSTRY)

"BEYOND THE BANNER" is a term that publishers have kicked around for years in terms of digital marketing opportunities. As the number of different channels grows, so does the opportunity to really go beyond the banner but it often requires a significant commitment.
At the American Business Media annual conference last month, Mitch Rouda, president of Farm Journal eMedia, said he didn't really know what the term "marketing services refers to," but then proceeded to share several examples of how Farm Journal is monetizing many of its digital products through its digital "AgWeb" offerings. These range from news and analysis to market prices, weather, market guides and more than 60 blogs and social media products.
"The Internet is a game of lure and reward," said Rouda. "We've got four assets: our list, our content and design, our tools and our reader's trust."
At AgWeb, Rouda has four direct reports--one in charge of technology, one in charge of editorial, one in charge of business and finance and one in charge of advertising. "That guy is really in charge of everything that makes money," says Rouda. "We sell with one team that handles print, TV and digital."
Farm Journal also has two project managers, one that works with AgWeb and one that works for the sales department in general. "That's a key part of how we work," said Rouda. "Any time you do anything custom, you need hand-holding. You have to be prepared, like an agency, to have account executives. If it's a microsite that's totally paid, our editors won't touch it, but they may be involved in the beginning on the concept. If it's advertorial, we use freelancers."
When it comes to pricing, Rouda says to think of it in two ways: cost and time component. "Almost every project has both," he says. "Just like an agency, we have to come up with a work plan, decide who's touching it, how much they get paid, what G&A over-ride to put on it, what profit over-ride to put on it, then we stack a media plan on top of that. Almost every project has a media component as well and we give them a unified price that includes all this."

Here, Rouda breaks down some of the AgWeb offerings.
Microsites and Sponsored Sections
Like many publishers, Farm Journal builds standalone microsites for advertisers as well as sponsored sections within its own sites. Pricing for microsites typically ranges between $20,000 and $100,000. "Microsite opportunities come from three things we bring to the table," says Rouda. "Number one is speed. If a client has a great website, they may just want to drive contacts to that site. But often they don't have one and we can make it happen faster. Number two is content--the client doesn't always know how to do it. Right now we're running a Dairy Life photo contest. The advertiser would rather have that on our site than theirs because it feels more official, even though when you get into it, it's completely advertorial."
The third factor is technology. "We have no problem sharing our tech department with a client--unlike we would with sharing our editors," says Rouda.
AgWeb also features dozens of sponsored sections which range from large to small programs. "Some people buy our corn coverage, so the keyword is tagged and appears any time we talk about corn," says Rouda. "Others sponsor very little things like polls."
Sponsored sections typically stay up for one-year contracts. Weed Warriors is a sponsored section dedicated to how farmers are battling weeds (there is a Weed Warriors TV series as we!l). "We wanted to expand our weed coverage and that's something driven by editors," says Rouda.
Social Media: Partner Tweets, Partner Fan Pages
Almost every publisher is doing something with social media, even if it's as simple as editors tweeting and posting to Facebook pages. However, not many publishers are actively monetizing social media yet.
Farm Journal is tapping into social media as a marketing service, including both "Partner Tweets" and Partner Fan Pages.
"The Twitter example is maybe the easiest," says Rouda. "We set up a Twitter widget and we follow people who are sponsors. We set them up in a window and give them a certain number of impressions to start with and then we divide those impressions up among sponsors. Theoretically, they're each getting a 12th of that inventory and we set a CPM on it. What's cool about it--first it helps our whole audience understand how social media works with that widget, which isn't just Farm Journal-focused. All of these guys are busy trying Twitter; some of our customers haven't tweeted yet, some of them have decided it's important, but don't know how to get an audience. But when they see it on our site and see the four or five big agri companies all chattering together, it grabs their attention. It makes more sense to look at it on our site than get individual followers."

Facebook fan pages operate in a similar manner only you can't show anybody your feed, according to Rouda. "Facebook is based on privacy settings and we can trade out fan pages," he says. "If we have say, 200,000 impressions and there are 10 sponsors, each gets 20,000 impressions. Every time you refresh you see a different fan page."
Mobile Text Alerts
While many b-to-b publishers are taking a wait-and-see approach with tablet apps, the opportunity for mobile apps is huge, particularly with an audience that is not desk-bound every day.
Farm Journal offers market updates, industry news and other updates that are often repackaged from the websites.
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
In February, Farm Journal made an equity investment in CommodityUPDATE, a provider of agricultural information to mobile phones that's delivered through a sponsored subscription model that costs $10 per month or $120 per year. "Farmers harvest once a year but they sell every day," says Rouda. "The CommodityUPDATE products offer need-to-know information for people in the field. It's information you can get online for free on AgWeb and several other places if you're at your computer. We created a way to get alerts sent to the user's phone on a regular basis while they're in the field."
With the investment in CommodityUPDATE, Farm Journal decided to let agri-business offer sponsored subscriptions to farmers at steep discounts. "They had thousands of farmers who pay $120 per year but to get it running in hurry, why don't you give it out for free to the best customers?" says Rouda. "There are a lot of farming companies giving out promotional clothes with their logos. You can give out your logo, or you can give them a subscription to something they really want, and they'll see it between 8-9 times per day with your name on it. Suddenly there's 50,000 subscribers at an average of $80."
Mobile Voice Alerts
Farm Journal also packages a series of mobile voice alerts for subscribers of its paid newsletter, Pro Farmer. "This is a sponsored product and we've already had 5,000 of the 17,000 subscribers to the newsletter say, 'I want you to call me every morning with your alerts,'" says Rouda.

AgWebMedley
Rouda refers to the AgWeb Medley--a series of products that include Cash Grain bids, Crop Comments and online polls--as "interactive eyeshiners." "Some people sponsor littler, but more sexy things," he says.
Crop Comments is a sponsored blog dealing with the age-old topic of "how high is the corn." "All season long people send in updates and photos on how high the corn is," says Rouda. "There is a lot of video and audio, and it's one of the most popular features on the site."
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
Cash Grain Bids is a sponsored calculator that lets farmers check pricing. "When farmers sell corn, it eventually goes to a grain elevator where prices change every day," says Rouda. "We license data from a third-party that tracks prices and users can enter their zip code and see prices for all the grain elevators in their neighborhood."
Farm Journal uses CPM as a frame of reference to come up with a flat fee for almost every sponsorship. "In order to come up with a flat fee we're still thinking in terms of CPM but we're not taking the risk or reward of over/under," says Rouda. "In the case of Cash Grain Bids, it's a six figure sponsorship. We know how much traffic it does. In most of these things there are two elements to the reach the sponsor gets--the reach they get anytime someone sees the ads but also the promotion in e-mail blasts, in print, in our own house ads saying, 'Come check out Cash Grain Bids, and oh, p.s., it's sponsored by Bayer.'"
Rouda says Farm Journal charges for roadblocking and for targeting. "You figure out your CPM, there's an upcharge for roadbocking, there's an upcharge for targeting, and then you add on the value for all the promotion," he adds. "Maybe it's only worth $10, but hey, we sent out 3 million of those things. Promotion is at a lower price, while targeted stuff at is at a higher price."
Targeted Promotions
Farm Journal also works on targeted promotions with advertisers that are embedded into its sites. "101 Ways to Use Your ATV" was a promotion sponsored by Honda that featured video of farmers using ATVs throughout their workday. Entries were given to Honda as lead generation.
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
"It's kind of on the edge of edit/ advertorial," says Rouda. "It's advertorial in the sense that it's sponsored by Honda, if you submit you're giving your name to Honda. Because of that, we tagged it as a Honda project."

The Farm Journal Legacy Project
Perhaps Farm Journal's biggest effort is the Farm Journal Legacy Project, a comprehensive effort dedicated to the future transfer of farm ownership (the average age of the American farmer today is 58--in 10 years it will be 40).
"The biggest transfer of American wealth will happen on American farms in the next few years," says Rouda. "Most farmers are unprepared. They need contracts, plans, earn-outs. We decided we had to help farmers realize this is a problem and show them how to deal with it."
The program includes a special annual magazine, a TV show and 60 workshops around country. "This is deep into seven figures to operate," says Rouda. "It's like an institute that we created and we did it with generous sponsorship of a single company [seed company Pioneer]--so it's almost like philanthropy. They have no editorial control or involvement, it's handled just like a product sponsorship."

LEWIS HAMILTON has promised no let-up as he aims to take a step closer to the title in Hungary this week.Back-to-back wins have seen the McLaren sensation open up a four-point lead over Ferrari star Felipe Massa, with reigning champion Kimi Raikkonen another three points further adrift after a woeful run of form. Hamilton has played down suggestions he should change tactics and adopt a safety-first policy to maintain his lead.He said: C[pounds sterling]ItCOs easy to say youCOll treat each race with a certain amount of respect. But the reality is I havenCOt changed my style. It seems to work for me and I enjoy pushing hard to achieve a good result. ThatCOs when I feel I am operating at my maximum. ItCOs potentially dangerous to start thinking about changing your approach at this point.C[pounds sterling]ICOll be honest: my approach has served me fairly well so far and ICOd need to give it some serious thought before attempting to change it.C[pounds sterling]LetCOs just say, it will be business as usual in Hungary this weekend.C[yen]
But he warned: C[pounds sterling]Hungary is very different from Germany.C[pounds sterling]Hockenheim is a track that allows you to slipstream and pass other drivers fairly easily. The Hungaroring is the opposite of that.C[pounds sterling]Qualifying will be crucial, and strategy will also be important in determining the optimum fuel weight for the opening stint.
